Every August, the Edinburgh International Festival transforms one of the world’s most beautiful cities, presenting three exhilarating weeks of the finest creators and performers from the arts world to over 100,000 festival-goers.

The Solution

Suggest My Fest generated a personalised list of recommended Edinburgh International Festival events, completely tailored to the user’s preferences.

The app asked festival-goers to enter what type of events they like via 4 sliders (Happy vs Sad, Epic vs Intimate, Classic vs Contemporary, Heart vs Mind) and by selecting 1 of 3 images. Via a customisable algorithm, a personalised list of recommended events was then automatically generated for the user based on:

  • How close their preferences are to an event’s values
  • Whether they liked any Facebook pages associated with an event
  • Whether any of their friends were attending an event on Facebook

From a total of 180, the top 5 recommended events were displayed to the user, including a visual list of why the event was suggested, links to book tickets, and the ability to attend the event on Facebook. Users could also click on an event to find out more, giving them a more informed opinion with description, images and YouTube videos. The list of events also included a ‘Wildcard’ event that EIF could set in an online admin suite, allowing them to promote events that were outwith the user’s preferences.
